Town Batter Morecambe during Storm Darragh

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/12/2024

GRIMSBY produced another fantastic away performance, winning 3-0 at Morecambe in one of their best performances of the season. The day will be remembered for the weather, but Mariners supporters will be delighted that the match was allowed to go ahead.

Strikers Justin Obikwu (2) and Danny Rose scored the goals as the Mariners dominated proceedings and looked very much like a team that deserved the play-off spot they now occupy.

Curtis Thompson for Jordan Davies was the only change with David Artell unsurprisingly wanting to minimise changes after the good win over Accrington Stanley.

Despite the conditions, Grimsby looked to play their passing game and a quick breakaway froom a Morecambe corner led to the first goal. Green turned and picked out Obikwu with a perfecly weighted pass and the Town striker raced through on goal and cooly slotted into the bottom corner.

Grimsby continued to threaten and it was no surpise when they added a second with a similar goal. A long pass from Green picking out Obiwku who this time dinked the ball over the keeper for a real striker's finish.

Morecambe came into the game more in the second half and their substitutions helped them have more of the game. Wright made a brilliant save to deny Hope and keep Grimsby's two goal cushion intact.

It was Town's sub Rose though who had replaced Obikwu who delivered the knock-out punch scoring from close range in front of a jubilant away crowd.

Grimsby with all their players fit again are a much stronger team than there were a few weeks ago, and they were convincing winners yet again, with a very pleasing clean sheet as well. The bench is packed with options and competition for places is much stronger than it was earlier in the season. The back-to-back wins have boosted confidence and for the first time in almost 20 years Grimsby go into the Christmas period with genuine prospects of featuring in the League Two promotion race come the business end of the season.
