The Luck of the Draw

GRIMSBY recorded their first home draw of the season, sharing the points with Chesterfield. Town took an early lead which was levelled from a Chesterfield corner. The away side had better chances before the break, but Town probably shaded it after the interval.
Obikwu, Cass and Luker all returned with Warren, Barrington and Rose dropping to the bench.
Grimsby began by employing a tactic of getting balls behind the Chesterfield defence and this nearly worked out in the very first minute when McEachran found Svanthorsson who tried to slide it past the 'keeper only for it to bobble wide of the far post..
Chesterfield then had some good chances. Firstly Colclough shot straight at Wright who blocked for a corner, then Dobra had a fantastic chance in the aftermath of a corner when the ball was played into him and he scooped it over from 4 yards out.
Town broke the deadlock on 17 minutes, somewhat against the run of play. Chesterfield cleared the ball from an earlier attack but it fell to Svanthorsson who headed in into the path of Davies who turned brilliantly, anticipating the flight of the ball, and slid it first time into the far corner.
Chesterfield continued to press. Rodger had to make a clearance off the line from Hobson, after a good cross from the impressive Horton. Naylor then missed another golden chance when he appeared to drag the ball wide when handed a golden opportunity. The ref strangely awarded a corner, which Naylor scored from with a glancing header past Wright.
Chesterfield had had most of the possession and the better chances in the first half but Town upped their game in the second.
Grimsby had a succession of early corners and had a penalty shout when Davies was brought down. Grimsby's best chance came from a fantastic turn by Hume which played in Svanthorsson, but the Icelander could not beat the 'keeper.
Rose, Green and Vernam came on but none of them were able to provide the Midas touch.
Grimsby can be pleased with a point against a good side. The referee made some bizarre decisions. One can complain it wasn't a corner for their goal and we should have had a penalty, but on the balance of play, a draw was about fair.
