Lester's Farewell

Jack Lester's Farewell Message

News From 26th January 2000

Jack Lester, who has just signed for Nottingham Forest, has sent this message by email to try and explain to Town fans around the world the reasons for his recent move.

Most people will know by now that Grimsby Town have accepted an offer for me from Nottingham Forest and that I have now agreed personal terms. I've always said that I wanted to wait till the end of the season and weigh up my options then, but the fact that Grimsby put me on the transfer list has forced me to make a decision.

I hope nobody thinks I am being disloyal by going to another first-division club. People will know, I'm sure, that I've always worked hard and given my best in the six years I've been here as a professional. On the other side the club has given me a thoroughly enjoyable six years of football. But a footballer's career is short, and we have to think about mundane things like earnings-related pensions and the possible effects of injuries.

I decided to send this message because I didn't just want to drift away without acknowledging the tremendous support I have had at Grimsby from the club, the management, the players, the other staff, the local press and radio, and of course the fans. I hope I haven't missed anyone out. Everyone has been an inspiration, in good times and bad. So I want to say 'thank you'.

I don't want to pick out individuals, but I can't fail to mention Richard O'Kelly, who was Youth Coach here, Kenny Swain, who made me a first-team regular, and the present management team of Alan Buckley and John Cockerill. Most of all I will miss the other players, who have been great mates, and I wish them every success in the seasons ahead.

Jack Lester
