Question of the Week

Next England manager?

Lawrence Snaps

Lennie Lawrence has publicly admitted what everyone else has known for weeks in that the Town boss is desperate to sign a striker. Today he warned his current crop of players that changes to the playing staff will be made if the goal drought continues.

A frustrated Lawrence said that unless the unlikely event of the current crop of Town strikers coming up with the goods actually materialised, rather than return a barren harvest game after game, then new players would be brought in. He also expressed doubts whether the current squad were capable of playing the 3-5-2 system he favours. A number of strikers have been linked with the Mariners in recent weeks, as you can see in our news archive, including Jevers from Everton, Dyer from Barnsley, and most recently Nigerian striker Samuel Ipoua. But Lawrence has failed so far to find his man, although a string of foreign trialists offer a possible avenue for the goal scorer Town are crying out for. We asked a Toulouse fan today of his opinion of 27 year old, who is 6 foot tall and weighs just over 12 stone. The French fan's verdict was:"Ipoua is a wasted talent, very skillful, very physical, but is reputed to be lazy in training and in matches relies on his talent. Perhaps in England he would come good if he had to fight for a chance to play". Lawrence's plans of what to do with the defence also face a further problem in that Paul Raven is almost certain to miss tomorrow's Worthington cup game against Wolves (who won 4-0 on Sunday). The news that Lawrence is thinking of putting Peter Handyside on loan means that could be three possible central defenders out, with Steve Livingstone currently out of action with an ankle injury.
