Wales Summon Coyne

Grimsby Town keeper Danny Coyne has won a recall to the Welsh squad for a training session in Spain. Coyne, who has been in exceptional form in recent games for his club, will fly to Spain and meet up with the Welsh squad immediately after the Birmingham game on Saturday

Wales fly out to La Manga in Spain for 4 days of training in the sun. Mark Hughes has named a 22-man squad for the trip of which Coyne is part of. Coyne, who received a fax this afternoon at Blundell Park from Wales manager Mark Hughes, was naturally delighted at being recognised again by his country, responding: "Brilliant, I've been waiting a very long time to be included and it's just a magnificent feeling for me. The last time I played for the Wales first team was for the first half against Switzerland, over four years ago." Welsh manager Mark Hughes speaking of the training session today said: "I hope they [the players] don't think it's a holiday because it isn't. It's a chance to just nail down a few things." Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence was almost as excited as Coyne by the call-up. "It's nothing more than the boy deserves." said Lawrence. "Danny's been in exceptional form of late and has pulled off some world class saves on more than one occasion, giving the team a great boost. It's great that he can train with the full Welsh squad and doesn't miss a competitive match for Town". One possible beneficiary of Coyne's international recognition may be New Zealand keeper Jason Batty (himself an international). Lennie Lawrence had decided that only two goalkeepers were required by the club, meaning that a third keeper was not a priority. Although Coyne's selection does not immediately give the Mariners a problem, any future involvement of Coyne with his national side may make a third keeper a necessity rather than a luxury.
