Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The TEF Challenge

By: The Fishy Team
Date: 21/02/2001

Grimsby Town Football Club recently announced the commencement of the NTL partnership with clubs in the Football League who have official websites. Mariners Net, GTFC's official website is involved in this venture which will provide much needed funds to the club in return for their participation.

NTL are placing Nine Million pounds into a pool to be shared amongst those clubs taking part. These funds will not be shared on an equal basis but are performance linked. Not by performances on the field but by the amount of activity on the website.

There are three components of the deal and each club will receive its share of the pool based on the following three criteria.

  • The number of hits each site receives

  • The number of visits to the on site betting service

  • The number of registrations for the on site quiz game.

In short, the more participants, the more cash to the Mariners.

Grimsby Town Football Club issued a statement last season to the effect that they were looking to get involved in more commercial activities as a means of supplementing the income to the club. Some of those initiatives are now in place and this new project by NTL provides a further opportunity for the club to secure much needed additional funds.

However, the club cannot determine the success of this venture. Its success rests entirely in the hands of the fans and supporters. It is they alone who can provide a successful outcome to this worthwhile project.

The Fishy is an independent website and has no formal links with Grimsby Town Football Club nor its website. But in a network that is operated by fans for fans, our writers, contributors, subscribers and readers are supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club and in that role we will be doing all we can to assist the Mariners.

We are therefore challenging all supporters to take a trip to Mariners Net and participate in the new features on the site.

The great news is that it is free and there is a bonus!!

At the end of each month, the most successful quiz player, will receive The Fishy prize of a Club Shop voucher for 35 pounds.

If you are not a quiz player you can still help. Please register for the game. Registrations alone bring money to the club

Everybody wins! You get the fun! You get the chance to win a prize! But most of all, as a loyal fan you will be helping the club you support! All for free!

The challenge is to find The Grimsby Quiz King (or Queen) Is it you??

The TEF Challenge commences on March 1. So start your training sessions now! The physio is standing by at: www.gtfc.co.uk !!
