Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The Striker Debate

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/03/2001

Fred and Bert have gone back packing around the world, and this week Billo caught up with the pair in Australia. He found them on Bondi Beach discussing the striker situation at Town.

The Striker Debate

The Striker Debate

FRED:
Good to see we have signed that Menno bloke Bert.

BERT:
Is he a striker?

FRED:
No. He is a midfielder.

BERT:
We got plenty of them. Where's the striker, someone to stick the ball in the back of the net?

FRED:
Well we have got Lee Matthews on trial, maybe he's the answer?

BERT:
He's broken his leg twice and can't even get into the reserve side at Leeds. It's scraping the barrel a bit.

FRED:
Well he's got a week to prove himself in a trial, and he'll cost nowt. I'm not saying he's the answer.

BERT:
Good! Lennie has been looking for five months now and got nowhere. It is far too long and we should have had one by now.

FRED:
It takes time and in any case the club don't have any money so we can only get a loan player.

BERT:
Loans! I'm sick of them. It's a no win situation - if the players any good they'll demand more than Town can afford. It would be cheaper to buy them in the first place.

FRED:
Nobody's bought Nielsen yet, or Fostervold.

BERT:
They had money to sign Nielsen. What happened to that?

FRED:
It's been spent on Willems - dunno what's happened to the rest.

BERT:
That's right. Nobody knows. They have made a right mess of both of them if you ask me. They should have replaced that Nielsen bloke as soon as they knew he was trying them on and signed that Willems straight away.

FRED:
They couldn't. They needed the money for a striker to replace Nielsen.

BERT:
Where is he then this striker?

FRED:
Lennie is still looking for him.

BERT:
How long do you think he will be before he gets one?

FRED:
Good question Bert. Time to go, the kippers are on.
