Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Speculation Round-Up

By: The Whisperer
Date: 09/03/2001

AS TRANSFER deadline day looms ever larger (March 22nd), The Fishy takes you into the dark and murky world of myth and legend that is the football transfer rumour mill. Each week The Whisperer gives you the lowdown on the latest stories to be 'doing the rounds' in the Nationwide League

  • Andy Campbell (Middlesbrough)

Andy Campbell Campbell has been linked with a number of clubs, notably Grimsby Town, Huddersfield and Aberdeen, although there are suggestions that another First Division side may be about to steal a march over its rivals.

In spite of the fact that Boro boss Bryan Robson openly stated he was looking to arrange a loan deal for the striker, Grimsby say that the Premiership side are not interested in allowing him to leave on-loan! Don't discount this one just yet!

Aberdeen have admitted that they were interested in the 23-year-old, but have also said that they are not considering a move for him at the moment.

Huddersfield appear to have ruled themselves out of the running for Armstrong after snapping-up forward Lee Morris on a month-long loan from Derby County.

The latest team to be linked with a move for Campbell are Gillingham. The Gills are set to lose the services of strikers Carl Asaba (to Sheffield United) along with Andy Thomson (see below) and may be about to launch a bid for the pacy ex-England Under-21 hitman.

  • Paul Raven (Grimsby Town)

Paul Raven The Grimsby Town defender has been linked with a move to Lincoln City, however, the deal looks increasingly unlikely to go ahead as Imps boss Alan Buckley has little money to spare and is unable to take any more players on-loan.

A free transfer may not be out of the question, whilst there is also a possibility that a player-plus-cash deal may be ironed out between the clubs involving City skipper John Finnigan who fell under the watchful eye of Mariners manager Lennie Lawrence earlier in the season.

  • Guy Ipoua (Scunthorpe United)

Guy Ipoua Scunthorpe's out-of-favour striker has also been linked to Grimsby, although Lawrence has already dampened any speculation concerning the Cameroonian and there appears to be very little truth in stories suggesting that he is a priority for The Mariners.

A more realistic possibility is that Ipoua will join up with John Beck's Cambridge United. The U's are currently in the market for a striker after losing on-loan Richie Humphreys for the remainder of the season and the tall, muscular Ipoua would slot in to Beck's preferred style of play with ease.

  • Lee Hodges (Scunthorpe United)

Lee Hodges Hodges has been linked with a variety of teams, but rumours suggesting that he is Millwall-bound seem to be well wide of the mark.

Scunthorpe have confirmed that they have received a bid for the midfielder, thought to be from Second Division promotion chasers Wigan Athletic.

  • Paul Evans (Brentford)

Paul Evans Wigan have also been linked with highly-rated Brentford midfielder Paul Evans. It is thought that the Welshman was the subject of an unsuccessful £100,000 bid from The Latics recently, who may well return with an improved offer.

Evans has also caught the eye of Cardiff boss Alan Cork and Colchester manager Steve Whitton, although it is thought that the U's would be unable to match the bidding power of their rivals.

Reading are also currently in the market for a central midfielder and manager Alan Pardew is believed to be watching proceedings with interest, whilst Luton boss Joe Kinnear may be another party preparing an offer for the popular Bee.

  • Jamie Forrester (Northampton)

Jamie Forrester The diminutive ex-Grimsby man is said to be a target of Premiership high-fliers Ipswich Town, although Cobblers boss Kevin Wilson laughed off reports suggesting that The Tractor Boys had made an offer of £250,000 for Forrester, saying that he may consider something closer to the £1 million mark.

  • Andy Thomson (Gillingham)

Andy Thomson The Scottish striker is out-of-favour at the Priestfield and is desperate to leave, although he is not quite desperate enough to accept a loan spell with Third Division basement club Carlisle United.

Motherwell are firmly expected to launch a bid to attract Thomson back to his hometown.

  • Jon Newby (Liverpool)

Jon Newby The precociously talented Liverpool striker has stated that he wants to join Andy Preece's Bury on a permanent basis, although it is unlikely that The Shakers will be able to raise the cash to secure on-loan Newby's services on a permanent basis in spite of them not having lost a game that he has started in this season.

  • Andy Morrison (Manchester City)

Andy Morrison Morrison is a target of Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock, who is currently desperately short of fit, experienced defenders.

It is expected that the centre-half will join The Blades on-loan for the remainder of the season very shortly.

    Other links this week:

  • Alan Cawley (midfielder) Leeds United to Sheffield Wednesday
  • Patrick Agyemang (striker) Wimbledon to Bradford City
  • Larus Sigurdsson (midfielder) West Brom - Luton Town
