New Striker Within Hours

By: The Fishy News Team
Date: 12/03/2001

LENNIE Lawrence hopes to bring a new striker on loan in the next few hours, in time to be named in the squad for Tuesday night's game against Wimbledon at Blundell Park. The Grimsby manager told Radio Humberside that the new striker would be "in the building" either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Lawrence, however, refused to reveal the player's identity, saying only that he was 20 or 21, from "a bigger club", but did not have "a great deal of experience".

The need for a new front player was further reinforced this morning when Daryl Clare reported in with a deadleg. Both the 22 year old Channel Islander and centre back Peter Handyside (stomach virus) are rated extremely doubtful for the match against the South London outfit.

Clare has been selected as a lone striker in the last two games against Huddersfield and Wolves, both of which the Mariners failed to score in. Lawrence indicated that the mystery loan player would be likely to start on the bench, making a return for Bradley Allen up front on the cards.

Lawrence has been forced to lower his targets, having spent the last few weeks fruitlessly trying to get a more experienced front player on loan. "Unfortunately we're not in a position to demand or entice players of experience" conceded the Grimsby boss.
