"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

Group Joke

From zyworld.com

Grimsby is a group joke. We came to use the name thinking it was a place where all the revolting people resided. How wrong could we be??? Grimsby is in fact a wonderful town where anyone would be PROUD to live. (ahhem). I am only promoting Grimsby because on the same day as finding out it was a real place, I found out that an awful lot of my family come from there. So this is a biased account. Although I'll try and be more accurate now.

Grimsby is a fishing port. This means it must smell like nothing else on the planet. The story of how Grimsby was founded and got its ridiculously insulting name, is in a thrilling and gripping north sea legend. Some Danish bloke was sent over to England to kill young prince Havelock whose sisters had already been killed by the command of Earl Godard. The guy sent to kill Havelock was named Grim (surname we hope). Grim couldn’t bring himself to kill the child, so he ran from Denmark and settled in a little English port, which was named after him.

Grimsby may smell and has an insulting name but it was a place of prosperity. While everyone else was starving to death my family were eating well (plenty of fish one would presume) and were getting pretty rich because captains got paid rather well. However, life wasn’t entirely great for anyone. People drowned on a frequent basis, and the women weren't allowed to fish so they had to look after the kids and clean most of their lives. The crew were on call ALL the time (24/7) and the work they did was very hard and in harsh conditions.

So Grimsby used to be pretty grim it has to be admitted. People were wealthy but they had to suffer to get there. However Grimsby has changed a lot over the times and is now rather a spectacular place! It has a primary school, a secondary school with a sixth form and IT facilities (woohoo) and its very own College. It also has a football club which Grimsby people seem to be very proud of, even though I have never heard of them so they're probably not very good.

So I am proud of my heritage. My family was rich while everyone else was starving and although the place will reek of fish I think you'll agree it is pretty cool.

Travelling to Grimsby

From The Independent

Sometimes silence says more than words. As his train approached Doncaster this week, the conductor made an announcement that began, "If you're travelling to Scunthorpe, Grimsby or Cleethorpes..." There followed a weight pause, during which passengers imagine him mouthing "I'm very sorry" Or "Don't bother". He finally completed the sentence in a way that was fairer to these unkindly maligned destinations: "Please change here."

John McCririck

From Channel 4 Racing

On Channel 4 racing line this morning John McCririck was wearing a ridiculous straw hat .

Alistair Down looked at him and said " You look like your wearing something an old biddy would wear on a day trip to cleethorpes ".
