Jonny Rowan And Simon Ford Talk About Their Roles

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 22/08/2001

GRIMSBY fans were delighted to see young Jonny Rowan claim the winning goal against Lincoln City at Blundell Park last night. Striking in injury time, when the game was at 1-1 with the first goal for Phil Jevons, Rowan's goal put Grimsby into the next round of the Worthington Cup.

After the game Rowan told the Grimsby Telegraph: "The first half was a bit dull, but we knew in the second half we had to pick it up, the crowd got behind us and we think we did what we had to do."

"Phil Jevons and I seem to be beginning to know each others' play, which is quite good for me and him, and hopefully the club, and hopefully we will strike up an even better partnership and get even more goals."

"I don't know who it was, but I just heard someone shout, "turn". I was surprised how much time I had in the box. I took a touch and struck it towards the goal, it took a deflection, but it was on target and didn't really move that much, it just flicked up over the keeper."

"It has been in my mind not scoring in the first two, but this is a lucky cup for me, that's two goals in two appearances, and I'm obviously really pleased. It was a local derby, there was an extra edge to it, and we want to go as far as we can in the cup."

"Alan Buckley contracted me from a YT and I had only just started as a professional when he left, which was a big shock. The new gaffer came in, and I was in a couple of weeks later - which was an even bigger shock, and hopefully I can take it on from here."

"It is going to be a very busy weekend, but the lads are buzzing at the minute, it is three wins out of three now, we want to make it four wins out of four and maybe five out of five on Monday!"

Simon Ford who was a subby for the game and nearly scored from a corner said "I thought I would sit on the bench for the whole game and just see it out in case there was an injury. That is what happened, Ben Chapman pulled up with something and I got on."

"I wasn't even supposed to go up for the corner, but Gally stayed back and he said go up, so I went up. I didn't know what position I was, he just said "go on get in there". I got sight of the ball, went round the back post and I thought it was in. I ran in, headed into the top corner, and the defender came out of nowhere."
