Lawrence on the Preston Penalty Incident

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/08/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE was adamant that the controversial penalty awarded by the referee's assistant against Preston on Saturday was authentic. "The linesman saw the penalty straight away. They are very hot on shirt pulling this year." said the Grimsby boss.

The disputed 54th minute spot kick, awarded for a shirt-pulling incident off the ball involving Wayne Burnett, was enough the secure the Mariners a point and maintain Grimsby's unbeaten record this season, in a start which has seen Town elevated to fourth spot in the First Division table. The Mariners took the lead through Jonathan Rowan's first ever league goal on 27 minutes, before falling behind to two stikes by the Lillywhites either side of half time.

"....Preston are a class act and set their stall out to attack..."

"Preston are a class act and set their stall out to attack. It was an end-to-end game and we gave it our best shot," said Lawrence. The Town boss also paid tribute to Preston's stiking pair of Healy and Macken: "Now Fulham and Blackburn have gone up there is not a better pair of strikers in the division. But we had the greatest share of possession and the draw was about right."
