Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Lennie Needs a Miracle!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 17/09/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE, Grimsby Town's manager echoed the thoughts of the fans in saying: "We're highly delighted but we'll worry about Liverpool when we get there. We'll just go, give it our best shot - and hope for a miracle." .

"Obviously from a financial point of view Liverpool is a great draw. They're a great club with a great stadium and it will be a pleasure to go there"

Saturday's draw took place less than an hour before the Forest game kicked off which Lawrence believed was ill timing: "Call me a traditionalist if you want but I prefer listening to the draw on a Thursday morning or a Monday morning - not just as we are getting ready for an important league game. Two o'clock on a Saturday is a very strange time for me."

"... We're third now, and we'll keep chipping away...."

Lawrence however is more concerned with the league campaign telling the Grimsby Telegraph: "Where we are sat in the table on Saturday night will be reasonably realistic and certainly by the end of September. We're third now, and we'll keep chipping away."

"That's the best 0-0 you'll see. It was a great point for us. We got completely outplayed in the first half and their movement and passing was miles better than ours. What we've done is shown some resilience and defended well when we've been second best. In the second half we have improved significantly. The second half was a little classic. Their keeper made a wonderful save to deny Danny. It pitched low and with pace and we had the best chance."

"There's been spells in every game where we've been second best but that's five clean sheets. We've dug in and we've worked and worked. I feel as good about this one point as I have done about getting three points in other games."

"This is a tough league and Forest surprised me. I thought they might run out of steam and they'll be one hell of a side in 18 months if he can keep them together. They're about the best we've played on the day. It was a great point."

  • Grimsby Town's match with Liverpool at Anfield has been confirmed as being on Tuesday 9th of October (8pm KO). Tickets for away supporters are priced £13 for adults and £7 for juniors, and are expected to go on sale next week.
