Where will Grimsby finish?

Danny Boy Don't Go!

By: Ray Lucas
Date: 02/11/2001

PICTURE the scene. You sign for a mid-table Division 1 outfit in 1999. You replace a fan's favourite. As if that's not bad enough, you were not even first choice at your previous club. That's what happened to Welshman Danny Coyne.

After some shaky displays, Danny has since matured into a fine keeper. His achievements have been made all the better when it's considered he is one of only 2 or 3 real quality players in the side.

It's been no surprise to me to hear that several big-name managers have been knocking on Town's door with bids. The bottom line is: If Danny goes to a bigger club, our chances of getting out of current position disappear almost completely.

Danny commands his penalty area with authority. If a new keeper was to be drafted in, it would take defences time to get used to him. Steve Croudson is our only other option, but he lacks the experience.

Although the call of the top clubs may be irresistible for now, it's only time before Danny is mixing it with the big boys. His display in our win at Anfield saw to that. The message is clear: keep Danny or the black clouds of relegation may be looming larger.
