Raven Loaned Out To Slash Wages Bill!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/12/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCEhas loaned out Paul Raven to Oxford leaving himself with his last 11 fit players. Lawrence is working hard to secure the signature of Marlon Broomes and as we forecast on the Fishy yesterday, he has to make some sacrifices.

By loaning out Raven, he is cutting the wages bill but might have to rely on some of the younger players if injury strikes again. With Livvo, Campbell, Gallimore, Rowan, Allen and Pouton on the injury list and Raven out on loan, Lennie is left with a bare cupboard.

It will be later today before it is known if Broomes is to sign a 6 month contract with Town with Lawrence having a further meeting today with him and his agent.

Although there is some concern about the length of the contract amongst the fans, Broomes himself does not want to commit himself to a deal longer than until the end of this season. He wants to wait until he knows that Grimsby will be in the first division next season before he makes a further commitment.

This suits both parties as Lawrence's contract finishes at the end of the season and if the Mariners do not survive the drop it is almost certain his contract will not be renewed.

This scenario might also be a blessing in disguise with some of the young players straining at the leash to get in the first team and we just might discover some talent among them. On the other hand, if Lawrence fails to sign Broomes he might be in real strife!!
