Coyne: In the first half he had little to do, as both teams couldn't find a way of shooting at the goal. His handling was good, as was his kicking but he made three vital saves in the second half at 2-1 to deny Portsmouth an equaliser.

Grade: B

Ford: The youngster is growing in stature and confidence, and the goal was a superb leap and header. Still needs to win more in the air defensively but overall he was very good. Looks more than adequate for our team at the moment.

Grade: B

Groves: Now the manager, and he had a decent game too, like most of the defence. He was probably the quieter of the three centre backs and lost out in the air to Crouch, which wasn't surprising. Solid game, no mistakes from the gaffer.

Grade: C+

Gallimore: His role as a centre back is perhaps bringing the best out of Gally. Wearing the captain's armband, he was very vocal all afternoon and makes a good skipper. These good performances aren't expected to continue for too long, surely?

Grade: B-

Neilson: Again, a good performance and linked up well when going forward. He does have a little trouble containing dangerous wingers but yesterday he too was solid. Good interceptions and awareness were shown, and passed the ball well too.

Grade: C+

Chapman: The smallest man on the pitch probably won more in the air than anybody. He showed great determination and aggression, as has come to be expected. He's looking more like a first team regular rather than a fringe player.

Grade: B

Coldicott: He didn't see much of the ball at his feet, instead he had to do the chasing. He pressed and harassed the Pompey midfield but was largely anonymous for the first half. He settled in more for the second half and was at his best in the last ten minutes.

Grade: C

Butterfield: An improved performance from the Boston-born utility player. He'd win possession then give it straight away, but never gave up. As the game wore on he grew confident and was able to turn and pass through midfield, using his time on the ball well.

Grade: C+

Burnett: The main man pulled his finger out, as requested, and probably influenced the way the game went. He was at the heart of everything, and looked more like the old Burnett of the 1998/9 era. He visibly grew tired near the end.

Grade: B

Thompson: Another player who got better as the game wore on. Fairly useless with the long ball game but as soon as Town started to pass it to the strikers, Thompson especially started to show good touches and great awareness.

Grade: C+

Jevons: Strikers' goal the first, and confidence for the second; Jevons worked hard for his brace. He created chances for himself and should have won a penalty. When the ball was at his feet he looked more like the player we had expected in the summer.

Grade: B

Subs

None were on long enough to grade, Willems, Jeffrey and Boulding made brief appearances, but Jeffrey looked useful near the end involved in good interplay.

Best part of Town's performance: The way we came from a goal behind to win, a feat Town hadn't achieved at all this season in the league. Also the young players looked more relaxed and mixed in well with the rest of the team. Everyone worked for each other. The first half performance wasn't much better than against Coventry, despite leading 2-1 at half time, but the second half was much better going forward - although we looked a little stretched at times defensively.

Areas for improvement: To carry on working at going forward. Jevons especially deserves a special mention as when the ball was at his feet there was a feeling that something was going to happen. He took on the defence ala Lester and looked more at home with the ball passed to his feet. Defensively we can't keep relying on Coyne and we need to be better in the air when defending set pieces.

Entertainment scale: If we had lost 1-0 like on Boxing Day, there still would have been a little improvement going forward. But we won 3-1 in a close game so we've managed to scrape out a victory, when needed, in an even game.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
