Stadium Goes One Step Further to Approval

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 04/02/2002

IN an official announcement from the club today it is reported that the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humberside has withdrawn its objection to the inclusion in the Local Plan of the Football Stadium site on the A180.

The statement continues: The withdrawal of the objection confirms that the allocation of the site for the stadium and enabling retail development is not in conflict with government policy.

The detail of the development has been considered by the Council, which will shortly grant the planning permission for the development subject to a legal agreement which contains measures which protect nearby residential areas, including Great Coates.

Commented developer Gerald Knight: "We are delighted that the Government has now withdrawn its objection to the inclusion of the site in the Local Plan. This withdrawal follows closely on the Secretary of State's decision last month that it was not necessary to call a public inquiry to decide on the application".

Nowithstanding that decision the Local Plan Inquiry will still be conducted and is due to begin later this month.

In real terms this decision means that Grimsby Town Football Club will be given the go ahead by the NE Lincs Council to commence the building of the new stadium.
