The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Town To Back Old Firms!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/05/2002

CHAIRMAN Peter Furneaux said today that Grimsby Town would back Rangers and Celtic to enter the football league. He pointed out that the issue is not listed on the agenda for Thursday's meeting but it could be brought up in "Any Other Business".

This statement will come as a surprise to the majority of Mariners supporters with the latest Fishy Poll showing a firm 73% No vote and numerous polls around the nation getting similar results.

Mr Furneaux did add that the support would be "subject to certain safeguards." "One of those, would be help with the extra travelling to Scotland."

"We'd want to be sure that it wasn't a case of one year's profit, to the detriment of Grimsby Town's future. Would the League be considering relegation of more clubs to reduce the First Division again?

"We need to find out what the proposal involves."

Mr Furneaux might have done better by consulting the supporters of the club for their views first. Not that we are suggesting that the fans should run the club. But they are the paying customers and in that regard their views are important.
