Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Wimbledon Preview

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 12/08/2002

AFTER the disappointing defeat to Norwich on Saturday, Town's first home game of the season, against Wimbledon, is a must win.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Previews > Wimbledon (h)

After a good week of positive vibes coming from Blundell Park and two new faces, the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion at Carrow Road. Despite looking good in patches Town went down 4-0 - records will state a hammering. Because of the defeat, and the nature of it, Town must prove their critics wrong and get the wagon rolling against a demoralised Wimbledon side. If ever a game was a must win so early into the season, this is it.

After the summer of shame for the Dons it got even worse on Saturday. Fans of the newly formed AFC Wimbledon protested against the move to Milton Keynes outside Selhurst Park before the game against Gillingham. The crowd was a poor 2,476. But wait it gets worse. Gillingham brought 1,808 of those supporters, leaving Wimbledon taking up just 668! Of course then you have to take into action the players complimentaries and other various schemes before you realise just how poor the showing was. I think its a fair assessment in saying that The Osmand Stand won't be at capacity. Oh Wimbledon lost 1-0 thanks to a Guy Ipoua goal.

Loan striker Paul Robinson won't be playing after Wimbledon refused to allow the striker to play in the clash. Phil Jevons is likely to win a place in the squad, as is youngster Darren Mansaram.

Last Time Out

23-03-02 Grimsby Town 6 Wimbledon 2

On the back of a fantastic 1-0 win at Wolves a confident Grimsby team destroyed their opponents in spectacular style. Despite Wimbledon taking the lead twice in the first half, Town responded fast first through Michael Boulding and then Alan Pouton before the break. It was in the second half that the riot act was read aloud. Town were unstoppable. Two more from Boulding and Pouton gave the fans a double hat-trick for the first time in ages.

Wimbledon Head-to-Head (23rd on The Opposition Ladder).

Danger Man

Neil Shipperley Despite the team losing several of its best players in the summer Wimbledon still possess some quality players, none more so than burly striker Neil Shipperley. The former Chelsea and Barnsley man loves nothing more than a rough battle with centre backs which no doubt means Steve Chettle will get the job of dealing with him. Although mentions are also deserved for goalkeeper Kelvin Davis who could be playing his last game for the club with Premiership Aston Villa taking a strong interest and youngster Adam Nowland who signed from Blackpool last summer.
