Sheffield Wed Report Card

IT’S been a long time since Dr Fishy was able to report back with some good news, but at last the occasion has arrived following the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. It’s also the first time the Mariners have kept a clean sheet since the Rotherham game.

Coyne: His kicking was a bit better, although he was nearly caught out with one clearance but thankfully Ford came to the rescue. He should be credited bit a great save from a Sibon header midway through the second half.
Grade: C+
Ward: His vulnerability was apparent in the first half against Johnston, but he was much tighter in the second half. It was a steady game for the youngster, who is still clearly adapting to the first team.
Grade: C
Barnard: Many moans and groans in the first half were directed at the deputising full back although his set-piece deliveries were spot on. His game improved as the match wore on and he had a hand in the second goal.
Grade: C+
Ford: Nothing along the ground got past Ford, although at times he did struggle against Kuqi in the air. However, his partnership with Santos gives cause for optimism as the two combined well.
Grade: C+
Santos: The first 20 minutes of the game were decidedly average for the Frenchman but he grew in stature as the game progressed. Won absolutely everything in the air, scored the opening goal and silenced the Wednesday fans.
Grade: B
Oster: He played on the right wing first half and left wing second half, to good effect. His superb run set up Town’s second goal, and he was the only Town player in the first half to have any drive or purpose.
Grade: B-
Campbell: Reverted to the right wing in the second half but he is now showing more confidence on the ball and is keeping it at his feet for longer. Strength isn’t his best attribute but he made it awkward for the Wednesday full-backs.
Grade: C+
Coldicott: Stace made more blocks and tackles in midfield than anyone else in the rest of the team. More often than not the ball would ricochet to an opponent but he was the unnoticed protector of the back four. Did a good job of it.
Grade: C+
Pouton: He was unlucky with a LEFT FOOT SHOT right at the end of the first half that missed the post by a matter of inches. He closed down and tracked back well, whilst also supplying the cross for Santos’ goal.
Grade: C+
Mansaram: He is becoming a more complete player, could and perhaps should have had a second goal near the end. His close control is improving with each game and he is displaying some good pace down the channels.
Grade: B-
Livingstone: Not as prolific in the air any more, but Mansaram appears to be learning off him. Livvo almost out-paced someone at one point into the corner flag, which lifted the crowd for about two seconds.
Grade: C
SUBS
Gavin: Arrived on the pitch too late to grade, in place of Ward and Gavin remained at right back, leaving Ford in the centre.
Overall Conclusion: Wednesday had their fair share of chances. Coyne was forced into a great save, and Sibon should have scored late on with a free header. There’s no doubt that if Town had played against a better team who could finish, they would have conceded at least two goals. But, the win should give the team more confidence, and it was the perfect way to reply to the dreadful performance at Preston last week. It should also prove to be a massive psychological boost for the whole club, as it leaves Wednesday bottom and puts six points between the two teams. Town are due to play Bradford at home soon, and if the Mariners win that encounter then it drags the Bantams firmly into the relegation scrap and will heighten Town’s survival chances.

| B+ | The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes. |
| B | This can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes. |
| B- | The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game. |
| C+ | A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score. |
| C | An average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance. |
| C- | Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match. |
| D+ | Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game. |
| D | This player shouldn't be playing in the near future. |
| D- | The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance |
| E | The player should be sacked |
| F | And then shot |
