The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Burnley 1-1 Grimsby

By: Richard Lord
Date: 22/03/2003

GRIMSBY Town drop back into the relegation places despite earning a 1-1 draw at Burnley this afternoon. An Alan Moore equaliser eight minutes into the second half cancelled out a first half Campbell strike.

Paul Groves made one change from the side that started at Rotherham in midweek with Coldicott replacing the injured Darren Barnard.

The opening exchanges were a largely forgettable affair. Town's formation frustrated the home side but the Mariners themselves could not create any openings at the other end.

Campbell broke the deadlock with a sneaky goal when he capitalised on an error by Steve Davis in the Burnley defence.

It was a late strike in the first half that handed Town the initiative but unfortunately they didn't go on to kill the game and allowed Burnley to press after the break.

Alan Moore scored the equaliser, which had been on the cards from the start of the second half. Chris Bolder came on to replace Coldicott who had broke down with another injury.

The home side were in the driving seat and it took some good defensive work from Santos and Ford to prevent another Burnley goal.

Despite the Burnley pressure, Danny Coyne wasn't called into action all that often. Mansaram had a great chance soon after the equaliser but he drilled the ball wide from a good position.

The travelling fans were made to sweat out the last five minutes as Burnley looked for the winner, only for the best chance to fall to Groves who saw his drive well held by the Burnley substitute keeper.

With Stoke winning away at Watford it means the Mariners slip back into the relegation places on goal difference, with Brighton's draw at Ipswich meaning the Gulls are only one point behind.

Sheffield Wednesday's defeat at Millwall sees them rooted to the bottom as it becomes increasingly likely that it was be any two from three more teams fro the drop.

Derby and Walsall are not helping themselves as they both lost this afternoon.
