Is football a business or a sport?

Furneaux Blasts Santos

FURIOUS Grimsby chairman Peter Furneaux vented his anger today after learning about out-of-contract midfielder Georges Santos' move to Ipswich Town. The development came as a surprise to his former employers, with whom the Capes Verdes international had spent pre-season training.

The Town chairman told Mariners Net: "To the best of my knowledge, he has not advised us as such despite our offer of a contract, of long-term duration, and we are very disappointed that, having trained with us for so long. He did not find it necessary to advise us of this before he did it, or even take it into account our offer.

"We are disappointed for the football club and for our manager and for our supporters, but we do wish him every success in the future and trust that after the three months he may find life is not as green on the other side of the fence and may wish to talk to us again".

"Constantly as he was here every day, we asked him what his intentions were and he would never give us any indication whatsoever. I sat next to him at the reserve game recently against Lincoln and I asked him exactly the same question. He smiled, shook hands with us all and just left without any indication that he was even doing anything at all. He is of that mind that he will go wherever he wants to go and we can only wish him every success as I’ve said before, and we’ll continue with our disappointment."

Fans favourite Santos was the supporters' choice for Player of the Season last year, despite only joining Grimsby half way through it. With the Mariners being relegated, it was unlikely that the African would remain at Blundell Park, with other clubs known to be interested in him. However, it was the manner of his departure, not the fact itself, which the club found most upsetting, as well as the fact the he is only on a short-term three-month contract at Ipswich.
