Is football a business or a sport?

Barnard's Welsh Call-Up

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 01/09/2003

WALES international manager Mark Hughes hasn't helped Grimsby's selection problems by calling Darren Barnard into the Wales squad for the forthcoming fixtures against Italy on Saturday September 6th in Milan and then for the game against Finland on the following Wednesday in Cardiff.

Both games are qualifying games for the European Championship in Portugal 2004.

On the date of the Italy game Grimsby Town have a home game against Peterborough, and as this piece is going to press nothing has been mentioned either by Grimsby Town or Wales to clarify Barnard’s position in this inevitable tug of war between club and country.

As this is a UEFA-sanctioned game Mark Hughes is within the rules to insist the Grimsby left back travels even if he isn't picked for the Welsh team as a similar thing happened to Danny Coyne a few seasons ago. The Fishy has contacted the Welsh FA for clarification in this matter and we are still waiting for a response from them, so watch this space for the Welsh FA’s response (if we get any).
