Blunderers At Football League Cop Out Again!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 15/01/2004

PETER Furneaux commented at the AGM just before Christmas about Portsmouth's non-payment of the parachute payment that they promised the relegated sides of the 2002-03 season.

The Fishy decided to seek clarification from the Football League about the agreement, so we sent the same email to the Football League and its relevant committee members to see what reaction it got. Here's the reply The Fishy got from The Football League:

"To clarify, the three clubs promoted from the First Division to the FA Premier League did agree to make a "parachute payment" for the benefit of those clubs relegated from the First to the Second Division. Two of the promoted clubs met this commitment and payments have been made to the three relegated clubs."

"The undertaking to make this "parachute payment" is however a moral one, not governed by League regulations. In such circumstances, we can only maintain discussions with the club concerned until a satisfactory outcome is reached. Once the outstanding amount has been received it will be distributed to the three clubs concerned. The clubs are aware of this situation and that League officials are available to address any concerns."

We also got a reply from the Football League about the email we sent to Peter Heard (Colchester United's chairman) saying that The Fishy has a reply to its e-mail and this proves that the so called committee members of the Football League didn't even know how things stood about the problem addressed.

It shows that the Football League is selling the relegated clubs down the river. Not only with the ITV Digital cock up but by not having the right regulations in place to sort this problem out.

It is amazing when a so-called Football League committee member doesn't even know how this so called agreement works. This money the Mariners are waiting for should be paid by the Football League until Portsmouth decide to pay up the sum of £100,000 it agreed on.

Fishy subscribers who would like to help Town recover their share of the parachute payments can do so by sending an email to Milan Mandaric, Pompey's chairman, asking him to cough up. Nothing abusive!!
