Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The Youth Development Programme

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/08/2004

ONE of the major issues that people bring up on the Fishy is the future of our youth programme. With finances tight it is one of the area's that is quickly affected by the cost cuttings that have to take place.

This presents another problem in itself. By cutting down on the youth programme, we lose out on the players that can be brought up by the club who can later be sold off for a fee. But it is not easy for the club to maintain a large youth training programme when the first team is struggling for funds.

So it is good to see that someone is willing to help.

The Grimsby Town Supporters Trust are running the Future of Youth Grand Prize Draw to raise funds to support the youth development programme and they need your help!

Now I know that not everyone likes the trust. Not everyone understands what it is about, which is probably the major reason that there are those who will not join it or support it. But almost everyone is, or should be, concerned about the youth development programme.

So I am asking for you to help by either buying or selling a few tickets for the draw.

You do not have to kill yourself! Just a few tickets to sell will work wonders. Put yourself out just a little bit to help your club.

The trust will be selling tickets at Blundell Park before every home game up to and including 28th August, when the draw will be made.

So why not dig deep and help out. We will start the ball rolling by donating 50 quid from the Fishy.

If you are also prepared to help out selling a few tickets, please e-mail Gill at gill.appleyard@gtst.net with your name and contact number. She will then get in touch with you.

If you are unable to help sell the tickets, then please think about buying some. Remember, you could win either a brand new Ford Ka, a Caribbean holiday for two, or a brand new PC. Plus all proceeds go towards the Trust's Future of Youth Campaign which, when first introduced by Paul Wilkinson in 2002, gave Graham Hockless, Greg Young and Kirk Wheeler the chance to remain at the Club and develop into the players we see today.

By the way, if you are unable to make the matches, you can also purchase tickets online by visiting the GTST shop.

In my opinion, this is a good way to assist the club no matter who is running it.

So when you buy your tickets, let us know and we will see how much the Fishy can raise and our 50 quid gives us a good start!!
