PREMIERSHIP big boys Charlton Athletic travel to Blundell Park for the first time in five years on Tuesday night in front of an expected 7,000 crowd in Cleethorpes, hoping that Russell Slade’s men can pull off another cup shock.

Town will enter this exciting game with Charlton with confidence high following their much needed 2-0 win over Leyton Orient on Saturday. That win followed three successive defeats to Wycombe, Rochdale and Macclesfield. Russell Slade’s side have a good home record already this season, particularly if you discount the Rochdale defeat.

Charlton, meanwhile have had an inconsistent start to their Premiership season. They have been thumped twice on their travels already this year - with beatings at Bolton (4-1) and Manchester City (4-0). Despite this, it’s one of Charlton’s best starts to a Premiership season, netting eight points from six games, lying in 9th place in the Premiership. Of course they have an array of talent in their squad, but Town fans and players can take heart from the fact that Charlton have one of the worst records in the League Cup in the country, as pointed out by the Charlton Athletic official website. You may also note that the Mariners are managed by someone called Andy Rodger! The Addicks manager meanwhile, Alan Curbishley (left) is perhaps one of the most respected managers in the English game. Curbishley has worked wonders for the London side since taking the reigns in 1991 with Steve Gritt, then going solo in the summer of 1995. Curbishley has not just maintained Premiership football, but has made the Addicks a force to be reckoned with in the upper tier of English football.
Just where do you start? Charlton have so many players that on their day can turn a game on it’s head. But perhaps the biggest name to stand out from their teamsheet is Danny Murphy who was signed just days before the start of the Premiership season for £2.5 million. Murphy has eight England caps to his name, whilst Francis Jeffers (left), another summer signing, has a great record in an England shirt, scoring in his one and only game under Sven Goran Eriksson against Australia in February 2003. Danish international Dennis Rommedahl also arrived at the Valley this summer, for a fee of £2 million. One of Charlton’s most consistent performers is ex Bury goalkeeper Dean Kiely, who after five year’s service to the club and nearly 200 appearances, has more than paid back his £1 million price fee. Playing in front of him will be former Spurs defenders Chris Perry and Luke Young, who before this season had never scored a professional goal, but now has bagged two! Graham Stuart provides experience aplenty in midfield, whilst Kevin Lisbie, who has played against the Mariners in Division One, could be up front.

two sides have met 50 times during their history, with Charlton having the edge - beating the Mariners 21 times, with the Marines managing only 17 victories. Meetings between the two sides always seem to produce goals - the two sides drew 5-5 in the 1930s, while more recently there have been 4-0 and 5-2 victories for the Addicks.

Town last played Charlton four years ago when they met at the Valley in the First Division. How the club’s fortunes have changed since then! Charlton ran out 4-0 winners against a Town side who only just survived relegation that season. Shaun Newton gave Charlton a 1-0 lead at half time, but then Town fell apart in the second half with Matias Svensonn, Carl Tiler and Andy Hunt netting for Alan Curbishley’s men. Graham Stuart, Dean Kiely, John McDermott and Stacy Coldicott are the sole survivors from that game.
