We regularly need new Cod Heads, so would appreciate contributions from lifelong supporters of the Mariners. This week's Cod Head is Steve Vigar.

Steve Vigar

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself.

Steve:
I'm Steve Vigar (aka KLM). 44 years young, living in Norfolk. I work for a Danish facilities company as a Security Support Manager, and look after Security contracts in hospitals all over the UK. I have 2 great kids, Kaley 17 and Keeran 6.

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Steve:
I started following the Mariners back in 1980. My parents were living in Keelby at the time and I was on leave from the RAF and think that alcohol may have a lot to do with the fact that I got dragged along one Saturday afternoon!.....My first game was a Div3 game on Saturday 16th Feb 1980 versus Swindon Town who we beat 2-0, with Ford and Cumming scoring for the Mariners, and I still have the programme. Incidentally, the game was sponsored by Clouds Nitescene, oh happy days for those that remember it.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Steve:
Easy one for me this, definitely Bob Cumming. He epitomised the grit, passion and pride that all wearers of the Black and White should show!...shame we haven't got a couple of Bobby's these days!

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Steve:
There's actually 2....The first was when Bob Cumming got Norman Hunter sent off at BP...fantastic! and oh how we laughed!
The second would be the Auto Windscreens triumph, for blatantly obvious reasons.

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Steve:
Least favourite would be Colchester's cow shed!.....Favourite would be difficult to narrow down really. Rushden's ground is nice as is Swindon's, but I don't really have a favourite as such (apart from BP!).

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Steve:
Best season for me was our Wembley double!.......Worst? Well the last 2 haven't been rosy have they?

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Steve:
Being arrested at Oxford's old Manor Ground for kicking and breaking a seat just after they equalised in injury time! On the way to the station in the Panda, it was involved in an RTA! They let me off with a roadside caution and I walked away laughing like a drain

Fishy:
What is the strangest thing you have ever done at a game?

Steve:
Fell asleep!....but it wasn't a Town game!

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Steve:
Many candidates.....Lawrie Mac, George Kerr, Alan Buckley.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Steve:
Season ticket holder so I'll get to most home games this term and as many always as I can.....What do I do when I can't get to a game?....easy: Worry!!

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Steve:
Batch, Crombie, Croft, Futcher, Macca, Groves, Gilbert, Ford, Cumming, Whymark, Mendonca.
Manager: Alan Buckley

Fishy:
What's the best-ever atmosphere you remember at a home and away game?

Steve:
Best ever atmosphere was Wembley(1st one); a close second would be both Liverpool away cup games! As for a home one, I would have to go back to the Norman Hunter incident.

Fishy:
If you have any, do your children support the Mariners?

Steve:
As previously said, 2 kids; daughter lives with her mum near Oxford, has been to a couple of Town games but unfortunately supports Liverpool and Celtic!....My boy has also been to a few games, home and away, but is now leaning towards Arsenal. Remind me to have serious words with both of them!
