Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Yeovil 2 Grimsby 1

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/12/2004

GRIMSBY'S unbeaten run ended at third place Yeovil this afternoon after two goals either side of half time gave the Mariners a second half mountain to climb. Town had edged most of the first 45 minutes, and were unfortunate to go in a goal down at the break.

Russell Slade decided to stick with the team and formation which picked up three points in midweek against Notts County, but made room for striker Darren Mansaram on the bench.

Town had the best of the first 45 minutes, but their chances were mainly restricted to Dean Gordon free kicks. The former Palace left back had three spot kicks in promising positions, but never forced the 'keeper to make a save, the closest of the trio just shaving the top of the cross bar.

On 43 minutes Lee Johnson showed Gordon how to do it, blasting a free kick into the top left hand corner of Williams' goal. It was harsh on the Mariners, after a first 45 minutes in which they had out-passed Yeovil but failed once again to have the cutting edge in front of goal.

Town got off to the worst possible start in the second half when an inch-perfect Andrejs Stolcers cross from the left was headed in by Bartosz Tarachulski.

The Mariners, however, failed to emulate their first half performance, and Yeovil had the better of the majority of the second 45 minutes, although neither side managed to get a shot on target until near the end of the game.

Russell Slade made three substitutions, bringing on Sestanovich on the wing, and replacing his twin strike force of Parkinson and Cramb with Reddy and Mansaram. It was the on-loan Blade, though, who gave Town a lifeline with just 5 minutes to go. Picking up the ball outside the penalty area, Sestanovich weaved his way past four or five Yeovil defenders and slotted it past a bemused Chris Weale. It was one of the most outstanding goals ever scored by a Grimsby player, and is surely destined to win goal of the season.

The referee allowed a stingy one minute of stoppage time, but Town still managed to fit two last gasp corners into those few seconds, with Williams advancing up the pitch for them. A fairy tale equaliser failed, however, to materialise.

Grimsby will once again rue their inability - especially away from home - to put their noses in front during their better spells. Yeovil, in comparison, had two shots on target in the entire game and scored with both of them. Russell Slade doubtless will continue in his quest to bring a new striker to Blundell Park next week.

League Table.
