Town's dreadful youth system led to Lennie Lawrence searching for rough diamonds elsewhere, none of whom achieved anything in particular. There can be no doubt, however, that Simon Ford was the cream of the crop, initially taking his chance well due to Town's continually departing centre backs. It wasn't until Lawrence was sacked and Paul Groves brought in Andy Todd on loan that Ford found his best form, Town survived relegation and the new Des walker had been unearthed with some truly superb displays.

Then something went wrong in the same startling way it went wrong for Des Walker in Euro '92. A proposed transfer to Wolves collapsed, Andy Todd joined Blackburn and Ford's new defensive partner was the venerable Steve Chettle. A subsequent relegation, terrible form and an obvious lack of motivation followed suit. The 8-1 defeat at Hartlepool was the eventual rock bottom. Having then not made the grade at Bristol Rovers, Ford washed up at Kilmarnock last season.
