Georges Santos 2002/0325 (2)1 goal

Georges Santos

Grimsby Town Player Of the Season for 2002/2003. A well known French/Cape Verdean who was booted out of Sheffield United for collecting a controversial red card in a game against West Bromwich Albion during which four United players were sent off. Santos was told by Neil Warnock he would never play for the Bramall Lane club again. He didn't.

Santos came to Blundell Park a very controversial player but settled in straight away playing for a start in his favoured central midfield position. After contract negotiations broke down Santos left Grimsby for a short period when he failed to extend his short term deal. With his return looking unlikely, he surprisingly came back to England from a stay in France and showed eagerness to play for Town again.

Santos was drafted in as a back-up centre back in a defender injury crisis, a position he adopted and held onto. With Steve Chettle almost sidelined and Paul Raven out of favour and on his way to Carlisle, Santos joined Simon Ford and Paul Groves at the heart of the defence in an attempt to keep Town up.

Georges showed strength, ambition and a never give up attitude which quickly saw him appear amongst the fans' favourites. At the end of the season Santos was voted Official Player Of The Season and was offered a contract for the new season, only to snub Paul Groves and join Ipswich Town.

His Ipswich career was an unsuccessful one and he left after a year at Portman Road to join Queens Park Rangers.

Next Player: Marcel Cas
