Tottenham Preview

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 19/09/2005

PREMIERSHIP big-boys Tottenham Hotspur visit Cleethorpes on Tuesday night as the Mariners take a break from their league campaign in the hope of pulling of a cup shock at Blundell Park.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Previews > Tottenham (h)

The Mariners may have reached the summit of League Two this weekend after a 3-0 home success over Torquay - but attention now turns to the game that has caught the imagination of the fans since the draw for the second round of the cup was made in August. The visit of Premiership giants Tottenham gives the Mariners players a chance to pit their wits against some of the best players in the top flight. Robbie Keane, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Andy Reid are all expected to play a part in the tie. That might sound daunting, but Town fans know all too well that a cup upset is not impossible, as past encounters at Blundell Park down the years have shown.

The Opposition

Overview
Spurs have had a decent start to the season, starting with two wins over Middlesborough and Portsmouth. Since then, the London side have failed to win with draws against Liverpool and Aston Villa, together with a defeat to Chelsea. Tottenham reached the quarter finals of the Carlin Cup last year and will look at this as a realistic chance to claim some silverware this season.

Their Squad
Spurs have one of the most talented and biggest squad's seen at White Hart Lane for years. In goal they have England Number One Paul Robinson. In defence they have fellow England defender Ledley King, along with South Korean defender Yong-Pyo Lee. In midfield they boast the likes of Jermain Jenas and former West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick. Dutch international Edgar Davids joined the club in the summer but has recently been out through injury. Sean Davis is on his way back from injury after a torrid time since his big money move from Fulham last summer. Jermain Defoe (left) grabs the goals up front, with 31 for the club already. Another young talent at White Hart Lane is Aaron Lennon who joined in the summer for Leeds. Lennon normally plays down the wing but can also play in attack and is likely to feature at some point in the game.

Key Player
Robbie Keane (left). Live-wire striker who has scored goals wherever he has been. Started his career with Wolves and has since played for Coventry, Inter Milan and Leeds, commanding combined transfer fees of £38 million. The Republic of Ireland striker has been restricted to a place on the bench for most of this season, but netted in the draw at Villa on Saturday and will be looking to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven.

Team News

TownTottenham

  • Town hope to include midfielder Andy Parkinson in the squad after he trained on Monday with no recurrence of the shin splints injury which ruled him out this weekend. He could come in on the right in place of Terry Barwick, or manager Russell Slade could opt for a more defensive midfield by keeping Barwick in the midfield.

  • Elsewhere, Russell Slade has no new injury worries with Ciaran Toner likely to keep his place on the bench after impressing at the weekend.
  • Martin Jol has quite a few injury problems to contend with as Spurs look to move into the second round. Anthony Gardner is definitely out after being stretchered off with a thigh injury at the weekend. He is likely to be out for two months.

  • Edgar Davids is unlikely to play, although Martin Jol will make a last check on his fitness before making a decision. Sean Davis will be added to the squad as he recovers from injury, as will ex Derby player Tom Huddlestone.

  • Former Forest defender Michael Dawson is likely to miss out with a hamstring strain. Fellow defender Noe Pamarot remains sidelined with knee ligament damage.

  • In the centre of defence, Jol has to chose two from Ledley King, Tom Huddlestone, Noureddine Naybet and Goran Bunjevcevic.

  • With a wealth of midfield talent at his disposal, Jol may well rest Michael Carrick, with Michael Brown starting in the engine room.

  • Egyptian striker Mido serves the final game of his suspension, while Grzegorz Rasiak is cup tied, having played against Town for Derby in the first round of the cup.

  • This means that Robbie Keane is certain to start in attack with England forward Jermaine Defoe likely to partner him.

    Head to Head

Spurs have the edge of the Mariners when it comes to looking at the history books, with nine wins to Town's five. Most of the matches against Spurs came in the old Division Two in the inter war period and the late 1940s. There's only ever been one draw between the two sides, that coming in a 1-1 draw in 1948. And with tonight's encounter going into extra time and penalties if the scores are level, that statistic will not change.

    Connections

Ciaran Toner. The diminutive midfielder came on to make his home debut on Saturday and will hope to face his former club on Tuesday evening. The 24 year old started his career at White Hart Lane without making a first team appearance. During his time he was loaned out to Peterborough and Bristol Rovers before a permanent move to Leyton Orient in 2002.

    Last Meeting

Town last met Tottenham in the League Cup (or the Rumbelows Cup as it was then), in the third round of the competition. This was back in October 1991 when Town were in the old Division Two, just a season before the Premiership came in. Alan Buckley's side gave a decent account of themselves, but just couldn't cope with the class of Spurs. Goals from David Howells, Gordon Durie and England legend Gary Lineker meant Spurs progressed into the next round, in front of 17,000 at Blundell Park.

Grimsby Team: Sherwood, McDermott, Jobling (M Smith), Futcher (Watson), Lever, Cunnington, Childs, Gilbert, Rees, Cockerill, Woods.

Tottenham Team: Thorstvedt, Edinburgh, Van Den Hauwe, Howells (Bergsson), Segley, Mabbutt, Stewart, Durie, Samways, Lineker, Allen (Walsh)

    Attendance: 17,017

    Prediction

I was feeling quietly optimistic, but then I realised Keane and Defoe would be playing together! Can Whittle and Jones hold them at bay? Mmmm, not so sure. I'm going for a 2-1 Town loss - but after a bit of extra time.
