Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Beat the Bookies: Week 21

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/12/2005

I am drawn to Wycombe like a moth to a flame. However I bet on the Bucks side, win, lose or total goals I always end up losing money! On Saturday two late goals by Bury left most Town fans happy, except those who had backed the Chairboys to win!

Boxing Day, and the festive season generally, traditionally sees some odd results and a few upsets. Whether this is due to over-eating and drinking from complacent "big" club players. too many games in a short spell, or whatever, doesn't really matter. The key thing is that the Xmas period is one where favourites are toppled in statistically significant quantities.

Chelsea are the ultimate favourites, the nearest thing to a racing certainty in the history of English football since the start of the professional era. This weekend, however, sees the Londoners with two tricky ties: neighbours Fulham at home and Man City away. The Cottagers and the Blues are 14/1 and 9/2 respectively with bet365.com to topple the mighty Chelsea. Only the very brave would back either of them!

Other possible big upsets are WBA to beat Man Utd (10-1), Pompey to beat Arsenal (15/2), Everton to beat Liverpool (11/4), Sunderland to win at Blackburn (6-1), Leicester to win at Reading (5-1), Mansfield to beat Northampton (7/2), and Torquay to beat Wycombe (5/2) all at bet365.com.

Town themselves are favourites to win both their Xmas games: Bury away and Lincoln at home. Bury, who have beaten high-flying Leyton Orient and Wycombe in their last two games, are 13/8 to win at Gigg Lane with bet365.com and Lincoln, whose recent form is showing a steady improvement, are 11/4 to triumph once again at Blundell Park.

There are so many possible upsets the only answer is to back them all! This week I've chosen to bet on all the possible doubles (there are 45), so if any two of the upsets occur I will win something. The more upsets occur the more I win. I probably need three upsets out of the ten to make a profit.

RECOMMENDED BET OF THE WEEK:
Fulham beat Chelsea, WBA beat Man Utd, Pompey beat Arsenal, Man City beat Chelsea, Sunderland beat Blackburn, Everton beat Liverpool, Leicester beat Reading, Bury beat Grimsby, Mansfield beat Northampton, Lincoln beat Grimsby:

45 doubles at 25p each, Total bet £11.25
