"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."
wednesday 21st june |
Lee Trundle
From icwales
"We needed a big game and a result like this to get the fans back behind us and hopefully we've done that," said Trundle. "No disrespect to Grimsby, but the fans expect us to beat teams like them two or 3-0. You can understand people getting a little frustrated when that doesn't happen. "But beating a side like Scunthorpe should lift the fans a bit and get them right behind us.

Tuesday night in Grimsby
From Football Lexicon by John Leigh and David Woodhouse.
"The English language is still coming to terms with the growing prominence of overseas players in the game. This phrase both conveys a sense of glamour and some suspicion that these exotic stars are no more than a bunch of mercenaries." Can they perform "week in week out"? Will they deliver on a "Wednesday night in Rochdale" or a "Tuesday night in Grimsby"? ("the location is usually in northern England, the date invariably midweek").

Leicester Fosse
From Footballs Strangest Moments by Andrew Ward.
"Surrendering to the elements has led to punishment. In 1912 six Leicester Fosse players left the pitch ten minutes from the end of a match away to Grimsby Town. The teams trainer urged them to walk off and was suspended as a result"

From the Sunday Times
Brian Laws, Ivano Bonetti and the plate of chicken
After a 3-2 defeat against Luton in 1996, Grimsby manager Brian Laws was telling his players a few home truths when his Italian striker, Ivano Bonetti, casually helped himself to a chicken leg from the buffet table. Incensed, Laws grabbed the plate and hurled it into Bonetti’s face, breaking his cheekbone. “I simply picked up a piece of chicken and the next thing I was on the floor in terrible pain,†Bonetti said. The case ended in court, with the striker winning damages.
