Beat the Bookies: Week 5

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/08/2006

LAST week Beat the Bookies was denied a winner by two equalisers: Peter Bore's goal againt Mansfield and Arsenal's late goal against Villa, the latter which denied a three figure win.

This weekend the Mariners play on Saturday at Bury. Although Bury have lost every league game so far they have just experienced the high of beating Sunderland in the Carling Cup, which must have given everyone at Gigg Lane a boost. Astonishingly bet365.com have made Town favourites beat Bury away from home, at 7/5. The Shakers are 8/5. It's hard to imagine Grimsby winning anything at the moment, the general pessimism which envelops the club seems overpowering. A Bury win I'm afraid has to be snapped up at those odds with bet365.com.

As I keep mentioning, the bookies have still not latched onto the fact that Terry Barwick is not a striker and have again made him the favourite to score the first goal. The genuine favourites consequently are longer odds with bet365.com than they normally would be. For instance Andy Bishop is 6/1 to score the first goal.

Elsewhere in the division Swindon, who have got off to a good start, should overcome lowly Stockport at home. Even though they are odds on, the Robins at 1/2 with bet365.com are a banker to win.

This weekend in the Premiership the upset of the day could come at Anfield. Liverpool, fresh from their exploits in European qualification in Israel, face West Ham, who travelled in comparison only as far as Watford in midweek. The Hammers are 11/2 with bet365.com to knock Liverpool off their perches.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Bury to beat Grimsby (8/5 with bet365.com).
  • 2. West Ham to beat Liverpool (11/2 with bet365.com).
