Help With The New Stadium Application!!
By: Bill Osborne
Date: 02/01/2007
GRIMSBY Town chairman John Fenty has called on the public to give overwhelming support to the club's proposed new stadium in the run-up to council consideration of the scheme.
The Mariners chief told shareholders at the AGM at Blundell Park in December that the club needed a "champion in the political arena" to push the project through. Early in the New Year, January 25, North East Lincolnshire Council will be asked to approve outline plans for what could eventually be a 21,100-seater 'Conoco Stadium' at Great Coates.
If this is successful the scheme will go to the Government for approval - backed by a report from the council.
Mr Fenty said that the council's decision and the kind of report it writes could be influenced by support for the scheme in the area.
"If you feel strongly about the stadium then your support down on the Town Hall doorstep or in the meeting room is needed.
"We have to show the council how much we want the scheme. We need a fans' initiative," he told shareholders.
The Government response to the stadium would be critical.
"They need to send it back for determination or call it in. If it is 'called in' the cost to the football club will be more than we can afford," he revealed.
"The people of Grimsby cannot afford to show apathy because that would be a signal to the council."
The club had issued 'survey forms' allowing people to add their names to the scheme and 3,500 had done so.
"We have had a fantastic response to our survey forms but it is not enough.
"If the Government believes the council is supporting the scheme I'm fairly confident we will get a sign off.
"We need MPs, councillors and the public to support it, and we need a champion in the political arena."
Planning approval is needed before the club can entice a major retailer onto the site. The cash from this retail 'enabling' development will be needed to help fund the stadium.

You Can Make a Difference
The club needs all the support it can get to convince the NE Lincs Council that it has the support of the community. We all need to do as much as we can. The Fishy is appealing to all fans to make their commitment known to those who will be making the decision on the future of the stadium project.
