Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Why the booing?
Why the booing?

The Season so Far

WELL the Mighty Mariners have started the season off with a home draw against one of the oldest clubs in the Football League, Notts County. With that followed by a penalty shoot-out defeat by Burnley in the old League Cup, it was quite apparent that Town do lack a proven striker.

I know that manager Alan Buckley is searching high and low for the right person, and he has got to be the right guy because - make no mistake about it - he will have to play in the style that Alan is now shaping into his present squad of players.

Against the Clarets Town easily matched the Burnley lads in every department, except the taking of penalties, but that is not just the Town lads who have a problem with penalties - just look at the England team! I have to admit I was very impressed with the overall performance of the Town lads, they were a credit to the style of play that Alan Buckley demands.

The response of the fans at the end of the game, although we got beat, was fantastic. They clapped the lads into the dressing room, something I have not seen for a long time.

A sad thing in my mind was the booing of Peter Bore when his name was announced on the loudspeaker and that he was coming on for the last ten to fifteen minutes. What on earth is that all about, he had not even kicked a ball in anger yet here he was getting booed? Hang your heads in shame whoever you are, the lad is still learning the game and the most important thing is that we should be behind our players not booing them before they even get on the pitch.

Certain fans seemed to have made their mind up about Peter Bore: moody, bigheaded, not interested, bad team player, these are some of the things that are being said about him. None of those things apply to Peter, he is genuinely trying to establish a place in the first team. He has had a hiccup in training with a minor injury and is now fit and raring to go.

Remember this, Peter Bore scored eight goals in about thirty games last year, not bad for a young eighteen-year-old, yet so-called Grimsby Town fans boo him before he kicks a ball in anger out on the football pitch.

Still to Saturday's game against Bury, the lovely playing surface of Gigg Lane will suit Town's style of football and I do fancy our chances there. I also think that Danny North will continue to improve. I look at Danny and I can see a lot of goals in him, especially if Alan can get the right man to play alongside Northy.

That is the big question, who is the boss looking at. Although Alan keeps all his cards to his chest, I am sure that this elusive striker is not to far away from signing for the Mariners.
