Where will Grimsby finish?

Hegarty Joins York

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/09/2007

NICK Hegarty has gone on loan to Conference Side York City after failing to break into the first team once again this season. The 21-year-old left winger has been overlooked by a succession of Grimsby managers despite being the only natural player in that position at the club.

Hegarty, who will be at York for a month's loan, featured in 17 games for the Mariners last season, most of them just after Alan Buckley arrived as manager. However the form of Ciaran Toner this year has meant Hegarty, who is the longest serving player at Blundell Park, has not even got as far as the bench.

Town boss Alan Buckley explained to Mariners Net: "It's just for one month. Nick was in the team when I joined the club last November. I've been quite impressed with him, he's got a lovely left foot."

Hegarty is a good crosser of the ball, and can even play up front. He tends to drift out of games, and is not the best tackler, presumably causing Russell Slade, Graham Rodger and Alan Buckley all to drop him. A prolonged spell of first team football may however benefit the youngster's game after several years on being on the fringes of the side.

Nick Hegarty Profile

  • Right back Luke Foulkes has been released by the Mariners, just a month into the season, in order to give the 18-year-old a chance to find another club. Foulkes, who signed a six month contract in the summer, has failed to break into the first team. Ironically Foulkes has been the last remaining right back on the Mariners' books following the departure of John McDermott and Gary Croft in the summer. Dave Mulligan, on loan from Scunthorpe, is currently playing at right back for Town.

  • Youngster Ryan Bennett was chosen as the Fishy's player of the month for August. The 17-year-old broke into the first team for the season's opener against Notts County, playing out of position in the troublesome right back spot, and showed a maturity beyond his years.
