The Opposition

Overview

Peterborough have been almost play off contenders in the league ever since their relegation in the 04-05 season missing out last year by three places and only two in the season previous. The Posh hope is that this is their year and with the arrival of Darren Ferguson in January, who replaced former Mariner Keith Alexander in the dugout, that it’s the perfect formula for the Posh to return to the third tier of English football. With Barry Fry in the board room it would always be an interesting experience and no one could say it wasn't insightful when Ron Atkinson was let in to assist the then manager with helpful lessons and advice on how to improve the squad. The only problem was the show showed and created a rift between player’s managers and Big Ron alike making a nearly impossible working and playing environment. Most fans of the Posh would agree it didn't exactly show the club in the best light and many hope Fry will now take a back seat and see how Ferguson will lead the team this season.

This Season
There weren't too many changes at London Road during the summer, as Ferguson tried to hold together a nucleus of the team which was so close to competing in the play offs only a few months ago. Butcher, Stirling and Trevor Benjamin all left over the summer for pastures new while Ferguson bought in young defender Claude Gnakpa from Swindon, Charlie Lee (left) from Millwall and Chris Westwood from Walsall to name a few. Most of Ferguson’s acquisitions were during the January transfer window during which time the young manager in his first few weeks at the club signed Joshua Low, Shane Blackett and Craig Mackail-Smith. Peterborough have acquired a squad which is quick on the break and strong in defence a lesson Ferguson will hoped to have learnt from last season isn't to sacrifice as many leads as they did last season which may have cost them a play-off place.

Key Player
Former Grays Athletic wonder boy Aaron Mclean was chased frantically by many clubs but it was Peterborough who secured the boy’s signature and now its easy to see why with 5 goals already to 9 appearance’s. A strong and battling striker the target man is good in the air and an eye for goal already, his pace can get him past and defender who isn't ready on the turn of pace and his shots from long range can be ferocious players

    Head to Head

Peterborough are the third successive team who Grimsby have played with relatively short league histories, Hereford and Chester being the other. The Posh have the edge on Grimsby over the years, but have not lost at London Road in the last three attempts.
