David:
This is David Peasgood on behalf of Grimsby Town International Supporters Club. I am delighted to have with me today Matt Tees, legendary football player for Grimsby in the 60's and early 70's and still a huge favourite of a great many supporters in Grimsby and around the world.

David:
It's 1973 since you last played for Town before going to Boston Utd. What happened there and did you not manage to stay in the game?

Matt:
Well no not really. After Boston I had my two young lads and I started following them in their under-age games on Sundays and the like.

David:
Did you not fancy going into coaching?

Matt:
No. It's a funny old game you know. You rely on the performance of 11 players out there on the pitch and if they're not going to perform for you you get the sack. A player can play bad for weeks and weeks and weeks, but if a manager has one or two bad games then he's out and he doesn't have a lot he can do about it.

David:
What about nowadays then Matt, what are you up to?

Matt:
Nowadays I drive a fork truck at D.F.D.S. Immingham you know. The shipping and that. I used to work before that for Smythe Shipping which worked with Volvo. We did all the export work for them and between Smythe and D.F.D.S. I've been there for 25 years this year.

David:
I have various questions from our members at GTISC and I wonder if I could start by asking if you are aware how many extra Matts aged 26 there are. At least two of our members have named their sons after you.

Matt:
Really? I remember just a few weeks ago being stopped here on the golf course by a lad from Luton just visiting the area and he spoke to me and said you're Matt Tees aren't you. He remembered me from all that time ago.

David:
Do you ever see any of the old lads?

Matt:
Well there's Charlie Wright. I still see a lot of Charlie because I married his sister so we see each other every so often when he comes up to York and we go to visit them there.

David:
What about Harry Wainman, he's still local?

Matt:
Well I've seen him in passing but not really to stop for a beer.

David:
How about Stuart Brace or Rod Green?

Matt:
Actually I've been enquiring about Rod because somebody told me he got killed in a car crash, and I tried to find out about it, then Dave Worthington came in the club and he said Rod runs an antique business over in Halifax so he's alright after all.

David:
You played with both Rod and Stuart. Did you have a prefer one or the other as a partnership?

Matt:
Oh no not at all. They both liked to have their own way of doing things. Rod was great at holding the ball up while Stuart was into the conjury. They used to say he could catch a greyhound, our Stuart. Boy he was fast.
