All's well that ends Welling

GRIMSBY bounced back to winning ways at home to Welling with goals from Jon-Paul Pittman and Ross Hannah in respective halves of the match. The result lifts Town back into the top ten in contention with the promotion positions.
Ross Hannah had been expected to start in place of the suspended John-Lewis but Jack Mackreth started alongside Pittman and Hannah once again took his place on the bench. Toto Nsiala came in at centre-half for the departed Boyce and with Paul Bignot returning to the side at right-back.
Welling had a good early chance when McKeown was penalised for picking up a backpass, but Welling failed to score from six yards with virtually every Town stood on the goal line.
Grimsby had the majority of possession but were unable to create much beyond a few half chances against a stubborn Welling outfit who had set their stall out to defend.
A moment of brilliance by Town gave the Mariners the lead just before half time. Neilson curled an inch perfect pass onto the feet of Pittman in the box, who struck the ball first time to give the motionless 'keeper no chance.
Tyrone Marsh twice went close for the visitors in a nervy spell for Town, on both occasions he should have done better, but then Bignot was hacked down when a marauding run into the Welling box was picked up by Neilson and Hannah stepped up to score from the spot.
Welling tried to mount a late challenge but the closest they came was when Fagan had an effort cleared off the line.
In the end Town came out fairly comfortable winners largely because they took thee chances which came their way (and Welling missed theirs), unlike the 0-0 draws that marked the early games of the season.
Town head to Lincoln on Tuesday night for the big derby, which in years gone by Grimsby have had a good record in - albeit on Boxing Day.
