GRIMSBY succumbed to their third consecutive league defeat with a 1-0 loss at Port Vale. The scoreline flattered the Mariners, who were well beaten over 90 minutes, and Vale could have scored more but for good saves by Pym and a goalline clearance by Maldini.

Turi returned to the defensive midfield position, Kacurri started in defence, and Fin Cartwright came into the midfield. Walker, Pruti and Doyle were the players left out.

Vale started strongly, and the defence looked shaky, but Town had Pym to thank after just three minutes when he deflected a strike by Hernandez onto the foot of the post. Grimsby were under the cosh and needed Maldini to produce a remarkable headed goal-line clearance to deny George Hall. Town had spells of possession but little to show at the other end and looked to have kept Vale at bay in the first half, but the home side broke the deadlock just before half-time thanks to a brilliant long-range strike by Dempsey. Vale were good value for their 1-0 half-time lead.

Pym had another save to make on the hour from Watters, then Town had their best chance from one of the few creative players when Vernam hit the woodwork from long-range. Town's substitutes came on but failed to make much of an impact, and the only real worry for the home side was that the lead was only 1-0. Pym, often the pantomime villain, was the Town man of the match.

After three defeats, the Mariners need to take stock. They have become too predictable and present the opposition with a known problem. It is hard to see where the goals are coming from apart from the odd long-range strike, and occasional Green flick-on at a corner. Our opponents don't even need to work out what to do. They can see how to play against us by watching what others have done, because we play the same way every week.

Grimsby return to Blundell Park on Saturday when they have another game with a side near the foot of the table, Northampton.
