Is football a business or a sport?

Lennie's Search

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/08/2000

Lennie Lawrence, Grimsby Town's new manager has not wasted any time in looking for new players, either as transfer targets or on loan. Lennie and assistant manager John Cockerill, were reported to be at the Scunthorpe United match on Monday night looking at players.

Yesterday (Wednesday) it was reported that he was trying to secure a player from Everton. There seems to be some doubt about his chances there as the Everton Rivals site stated: "Grimsby Town manager Lennie 'Lovely Geezer' Lawrence is apparently seeking to take Phil Jevons on loan for 3 months to add some much needed physical presence to his side's lightweight, goal-shy attack. "However, it is reported that Walter Smith is reluctant to let him go, as he sees him playing a part at Goodison at some point this season. "When he won't let a youngster who is stagnating in the reserves go out on loan - a move that would surely do him good - it makes you wonder how bad Duncan Ferguson's 'knock on the calf' really is." The good news however is that Lennie is out there foraging among the divisions to find players who can strengthen the Town team particularly in the goal scoring area. Whether Lennie sees that as a delivery problem or a scoring problem remains to be seen. As there is no football for Grimsby on Saturday due to international commitments, Lennie is not rushing to bring anyone in until the following week if he is successful in his search.
