Nielsen To Sign

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 03/12/2000

To the delight of Grimsby Town fans around the globe, The Fishy is able to reveal that on-loan Danish striker David Nielsen will complete a permanent move to Blundell Park within the next few days.

After extensive negotiaitions with Nielsen's agent this weekend, Mariners boss Lennie Lawrence is expected to announce the signing imminently. It is believed that a fee of £425,000 has been agreed between the Mariners and Nielsen's former club FC Copenhagen. "I've held preliminary talks with his English agent and I'm hoping to get it tied up," said Lawrence, who, barring any last minute hitches, will make the Dane his first signing since taking over at Blundell Park. "I'd like to get a handshake on it this weekend and get it finalised on Monday or Tuesday. We haven't done it yet, but it's a big, big signing for us," continued Lawrence, with a rhetoric that suggested the deal was all but complete. Speculation has been rife over the future of 23-year old Nielsen, after he was linked to clubs including Sheffield Wednesday, Nottm Forest and Leicester City, but it now seems that Grimsby Town have finally captured their man. The Mariners boss went on to suggest that Nielsen may go on to play for a bigger club given time, whilst also hinting at the length of contract that had been agreed, as he continued: "He might be good enough for the Premiership in the end, but he needs to be with me and this club for 18 months first. "He needs a period of stability. He's only young and he's already played in Germany and Denmark." Grimsby supporters will be hoping that this is just the first in a string of signings by Lawrence, as he looks to continue strengthening his fragile squad with yet more overseas imports.
