Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Calum Milne

Fishy:
Please could you give a brief introduction of yourself.

Calum: My name is Calum Milne, I'm 35 years old, Born in Grimsby but currently living in Crawley, Sussex.

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Calum:
My first game was around the 1970-71 season ( possibly Doncaster Rovers ) when I was about 4 years old. My Father was Grimsby Towns club doctor and he used to take me to watch the games from the directors box. Another benefit of your dad being the club doctor apart from not having to pay to get in and using the "Players and Officials only" entrance was he had a car parking space reserved literally 10 feet away from the turnstile ( In case of emergencies at the hospital!! ) and that meant we could leave home 15 minutes before the kick-off and still be there on time!.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Calum:
Paul Groves. Not the most skilful player that has worn the town shirt but the most consistent. To score 10 + goals season after season from midfield is outstanding. He's never pulled out of a tackle and to miss only 1 game in 300 (or whatever it is) is amazing. The best captain Town have ever had. But my all time hero that you knew pulled his town shirt on with pride was Bobby Cumming. He was fast, skilful, versatile, scored plenty of goals but above all he was THE hardest player ever to wear the black and white shirt. The memory that will stay with me forever is seeing Bob Cumming "Nutt" Norman Hunter when town played Barnsley at Blundell Park on Boxing day, the best thing was, Norman Hunter got sent-off!!

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Calum:
The play-off final in 1998 was a bit special, I got married on the Saturday in Sussex and about 30 friends and family came down from Grimsby and stayed overnight. We all went to Wembley on the Sunday thanks to yours truly who bought 30 tickets after joining the queue at Blundell Park at 5am the morning they went on sale, which happened to be the morning after my stag night!!, To top the weekend off, on the Monday we flew off to Turkey on our honeymoon, Came back Two weeks later on the day the World cup started!!

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Calum:
Favourite would be Goodison park, fantastic memories after town won 1-0 with a last minute goal from Paul Wilkinson. Least favourite is Walsall, soulless/lifeless a ground built with breeze blocks and corrugated Iron. Anfield is pretty poor as well , If you thought Blundell Park was bad for parking/traffic go to Liverpool you'll never moan again about Grimsby road.

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Calum:
The best, the double Wembley season, unless town win promotion to the premiership that season will never be beaten. The worst, the relegation season under Mick Lyons, It was just a big ego trip for him, how could he justify playing himself at centre forward?. He was a disgrace.

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Calum:
Went to see town play at Swansea, before the kick-off I bought a chicken and mushroom pie from the "pieman" walking around the pitch.I had my mis-giving's from the very first bite as the meat was "luke warm" at best and the meat had a pink colour to it!!, but the fact that I was starving I decided to eat it any way. By half-time I was suffering from terrible diarrea, spent the half sat on the toilet watching the world fall out of my bottom. managed to see the last 5 minutes (0-0).Stopped at every service station on the way home. Later found out I'd suffered from acute Gastroentiritis and had 2 weeks off work.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Calum:
Alan Buckley. If it wasn't for him we would still be a struggling third division club, but all good things must come to an end!!. I hope the town fans remember Buckley for the great things he did for the club i.e.; the three promotion seasons, The Wembley visits, The cup runs etc..etc. and not just the memories of last season.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Calum:
Average about 10 games a season (more if town are doing well! ). I drive the wife mad by staring at teletext for 90 minutes.

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Calum:
Batch, McDermott, K.Moore, Futcher, Crombie, Cumming, Groves, Waters, Bonnetti, Mendonca, Wilkinson
