Next England manager?

Hughes Snubs Coyne

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/02/2001

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Danny Coyne has failed to be recalled to the Welsh national squad for a training session in La Manga, Spain, ahead of next month's world club qualifier. The 27 year old keeper, who has been in the form of his life this season for the Mariners, had been hoping for a recall.

Wales international manager Mark Hughes named only two keepers in the party to travel to Spain. Paul Jones (Southampton) and Mark Crossley (Middlesbrough), were selected ahead of the Grimsby goalkeeper, causing Coyne (who has one international cap with Wales to his name) to miss out.

Lennie Lawrence attributed Coyne's omission to the fact that there is no Premiership football on the weekend of the training session, influencing the Wales manager's decision to include Coyne in the squad. Hughes had recalled Coyne for the last Welsh training camp back in November.

Two Nottingham Forest players, Town's opponents on the day that Coyne would have departed to La Manga were named in the squad by the former Man Utd striker, now manager of his country. Andy Johnson (midfield) and Christian Edwards (central defence) were both included in the party due to travel to Spain. Unfortunately for the Mariners the Forest pair will not be departing for Spain until after the fixture at the City Ground against Grimsby Town on the 24th March has been completed.

Coyne's next chance to be selected for his country comes at the end of the month when Wales have World cup qualifiers lined up against Armenia (away) and Ukraine (home)
