Lee Matthews Update

LENNIE LAWRENCE has revealed his ambitions of signing Leeds striker Lee Matthews on a permanent basis during this week. Matthews is seen as a long-term successor to Steve Livingstone and will hopefully be wearing the black and white of Grimsby in the very near future.

"They won't let him play in the reserves but we've seen enough of him anyway" commented the Town boss, who is aiming to beat off interest from relegation rivals Tranmere. "I've heard all about Tranmere and we may look to do him by the end of the week."

The Gaffer also spoke of the 22-year old's future at the club: "He's one we've had an eye on for a while and we hope a couple or three weeks down the road he'll be ready. Definitely. He's a free with money after so many games and that sort of thing. He needs to get fit, but he's a good type for us. His career's stood still for 18 months, but I see him as Livvo's understudy initially."

The former England Under-21 forward has created interest from a number of division one managers. Once he was regarded very highly and played alongside the likes of Harry Kewell, Alan Smith and Johnathon Woodgate. The striker also fits in well with the age group that Lawrence is aiming to develop.
