Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Striker Rumour Mill

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/03/2001

THE WORD is that Manager Lennie Lawrence has finally got his man. A new face will appear on Grimsby Town's bench for the rearranged fixture with Wimbledon at Blundell Park tonight. Although the player has not yet been named, the rumour mill is in full swing on the Message Boards.

The club have however dismissed Fast Ted's statement on the Pontoonites Message Board as pure speculation:

"After weeks of complex contractual negotiations, a source close to the club has revealed that our new striker - Mrs Turbot the tea lady will partner Michael Jeffrey up front on Saturday.

An insider was quoted "We are very lucky to get Mrs Turbot. A lot of other parties were interested and we had to beat off competition from Fish 'n Chick, Scartho Pet shop, and Hartford Motors. We are confident that she will solve our goal scoring crisis, and knock-up a lovely brew for the lads after every defeat, er sorry, game". The club refused to disclose the particulars of the deal, although a three-figure sum was mentioned."

The strongest rumours are linked to Fulham's Lucas (Luke) Cornwall (pictured, top) as Lennie Lawrence's mystery striker although the Fishy have been unable to obtain any confirmation of the story with Fulham FC taking a "No comment" stance.

Luke Cornwall

Height: 5 10
Date of Birth: 23/07/1980
Place of birth: Lambeth
Fulham Debut: Notts County (a) 1999
Position: Forward
Shirt Number: 28

Young striker Luke is said to be one of the hottest prospects to come through the Fulham youth system for a while. A forward who has scored goals at every level he has played at, he netted his first for the first team in the 3-3 draw with York City in 1998. Luke made his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Notts County that same year. Chances became a little limited towards the end of the 98/99 season, so local rivals QPR took him on loan and Luke showed what he can do by firing a hat-trick in the reserves - against Fulham of all teams! The Whites then took him back and he is now back in the reserves, although many supporters believe that he merits a fair run in the first team.
