Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

LL: All or Nothing!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/04/2001

Lennie Lawrence says the game against Tranmere is bigger than the Mariners' Wembley Double 3 years ago. "You can say play-off finals or Coca Cola Cup finals, but they're not as big as this. The stakes are are not as great and if you get to a Wembley final it's only half a million," said Lawrence.

"It's the biggest game since we've been in the first division but the difference is that the stakes are higher" he told the Grimsby Telegraph. "I know there's games to go but if Tranmere don't win it's going to be very, very difficult for them, and if we don't win it's going to be very, very difficult for us."

Looking at nothing but winning Lawrence said he has urged his players to show no fear against Tranmere. "The players need to keep a clear head and keep calm and it will need different sorts of courage and character, they can't be afraid to show for the ball or have a shot. Our team shape isn't going to change a lot but we need to play as well as we did against Birmingham and Wimbledon in our last two home games."

"They've got to able to turn round at 10 to five and say I've done as much as I can do. If you do that you're either good enough or you're not."

As for Tranmere, Lawrence warned "Don't think they've given up the ghost, they've got nothing to lose. If Tranmere are going to stay up they've got to get above us and we're one of the teams that they can get to."

"It doesn't matter who we're playing tomorrow, what matters is that we win."
