Question of the Week

Next England manager?

Thank Jevons!

GRIMSBY TOWN have today signed 21-year-old striker Phil Jevons from Everton. According to reports the fee is quoted as £150,000 (rising to £250,000 on appearances). This is not the first time that the Mariners have been linked with Jevons.

Phil Jevons It was rumoured a few months ago that manager Lawrence was interested in him but nothing further was heard. At that time a number of clubs were linked to him and Grimsby were listed as just one of a few.

This news will be greeted with delight by Grimsby fans as the striker situation has been an area of concern for almost two seasons and Jevons is rated as a good player. Once again it looks that Lennie is looking to youth with Jevons being only 21.

Jevons has a 5-year-association with Everton, having joined the Toffees as a trainee, and has made three first team starts, and six substitute appearances during his time with the Goodison Park outfit. He is known as a striker with pace and considerable finishing skills to regular spectators at Everton reserve games.

Earlier this week Lennie Lawrence spoke of his frustration with the prolonged nature of his attempt to buy Luke Cornwall from Fulham, claiming that he was going to look elsewhere for a new front player. "I have got one or two other irons in the fire, and it may be that we will pursue them" hinted the Grimsby boss.

The Grimsby manager has kept his attempt to woo Jevons to the club close to his chest, perhaps learning the lessons of the Trevor Benjamin saga, which came at the height of an era in which Lawrence had a habit of revealing his targets to the press long before the likelihood of them ever being realised.
