Who will win League 2?

Jevons to Make Swede Dream Debut

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/07/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN's new striker Phil Jevons will pull on the black and white shirt of the Mariners for the first time this afternoon, making his debut for Town against Swedish first division side Ystads at 3pm. On trial Leicester City winger Kevin Ellison misses out however with a thigh strain.

Jevons is expected to make his debut in a new strike partnership with Bradley Allen, as Lennie Lawrence begins the task of deciding which combination of forwards he will favour next month when it comes to the season proper.

"...I just can't wait to pull on the jersey and get playing..."

"I just can't wait to pull on the jersey and get playing," the £250,000 signing told the Evening Telegraph. "It's going to be our first competitive game since we came back and it will take some time for me to be at my best."

Fellow forward Steve Livingstone is also unavailable for the friendly encounter with a calf problem. Along with Kevin Ellison the burly front man, however, is expected to feature in Monday's second fixture of the tour against Trelleborg (7pm), when the pair have both recovered from their respective knocks.

Jevons is relaxed about playing his first game away from Blundell Park in a non-competitive fixture, believing it eases the burden of the new challenge facing the former Evertonian, who scored 37 goals in 87 appearances for the Goodison Park second string: "It's easier for me that way, and there's not so much pressure. I haven't played in a match with any of the lads and it will take time to gel.

"...We just need to get to know each other in these types of games..."

"Maybe today I will make a couple of runs and get picked out by the midfielders and we'll start to develop an understanding. We just need to get to know each other in these types of games, but being here has definitely taken the pressure off a bit."

Tomorrow, manager Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence departs for to Norway to watch Norwegian central defensive target Arne Vidar Moen in action for Lillestrom.
